We are seeking a First Mate to join our Ohana. This position will be located in Okinawa, Japan. 

The First Mate is second in command aboard the vessel and must be capable of assuming full command should the Captain become incapacitated. The Captain relies heavily on the First Mate to supervise and coordinate day-to-day activities of all members of the deck department, and to participate fully in those activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • With instruction and supervision from the Captain, become familiar with the handling characteristics of the vessel (maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids, steering, de-watering, safety apparatus, etc.) Perform navigational watches while underway and safety/anchor/dock watches at other times.
  • Assist the Captain with the maintenance of required logbooks according to established practice and in established formats.
  • Direct and supervise all members of the deck department, and ensure that each understands and performs his/her assigned duties adequately. Assist Captain with training and orientation of new crew members. Coordinate line-handling when coming to port, anchoring, skiff-launching and retrieval, deck maintenance and safety.
  • First mate and deck crew are responsible for the loading and offloading of the HSMST onboard RSC-2.  The first mate and deck crew are responsible to the safe operations of the HSMSTs.  The first mate and deck crew will be responsible for operating the HSMSTs in the manual and remote mode.
  • The first mate will be responsible for establishing the course to the target area, fuel consumption management and time management. 
  • The first mate will assure all navigation charts are current and will update all obsolete charts. 
  • Participate in the design and execution of emergency drills, generally taking charge of on-scene response actions. Help ensure written drill reports are properly logged.
  • All members of the deck department contribute to the maintenance of the HSMSTs The First Mate supervises this work and maintains HSMSTs related work records.
  • Routinely update scheduling and tasking information on the crew mess whiteboard, and pass-the-word when sudden changes need to be made.
  • Ensure all issued equipment is returned and maintained in good order.

Minimum requirements:

  • USCG license with a minimum rating of Mate 500 ton ocean rating.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen, reference checks and background check.
  • Must have sufficiently acute hearing, eyesight and depth perception to meet the demands of at-sea service.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Desired Skills/Abilities:

  • Outgoing and friendly demeanor, able to engage and communicate easily with crew.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word, plus general writing abilities.
